When there's only the two of us...BUDU!

For more than nothing else am putting up pictures of a humble lunch meal since the children are no more at home.  A meal just sumptuous for old folks like us - the 'man of the house' (MOTH) and yours truly.    

 I am giving the 'man of the house' a free hand writing down the appetiser/dipping sauce he adores most...mind you due to his 'age' (hate it when anyone refers him now as 'warga emas') he cannot enjoy this heavenly sauce as much as he likes...that's the price of being a 'warga emas'...sad 'sighhhh'.

Apa lagi budu sambal durian makanan tradisi semenjak kanak kanak. 

Tradisi orang Kelantan kebanyakannya suka makan budu tak kira peringkat usia. Budu boleh dikatakan makanan atau lauk yang 'berketurunan' kerana kalau ibu bapa tak makan budu anak anak pun ikut tak makan budu (kebanyakan). Ada juga di antara orang Kelantan yang 'action' tak suka budu... malu kerana budu makanan yang tak ada 'kelas'. 'Style' atau cara makan budu ini berbagai ikut citarasa masing masing bergantung kepada habit ibu bapa atau sesiapa yang menghidang budu. Makan budu dikira tidak lengkap tanpa asam limau nipis atau asam kerat lintang (ase kerat lete) bawang, lada burung dan ikan panggang tawar. Lebih menarik lagi dimasukkan tempoyak atau sambal durian. (titik air lior aku).  Semua ramuan ini digabung atau sebagai pencicah dengan ulaman bergantung kepada sipemakannya. Ada orang suka makan cara yang agak 'tertib' sikit iaitu ramuan tadi tidak digaul dan dicicah sedikit sedikit dengan ulam dan ikan. Budu sebenarnya tidak sedap kalau dihidang terlalu banyak dalam pinggan. Ianya lebih sedap kalau ditambah sedikit sedikit semasa makan (mungkin orang tak percaya...cubalah). Ada juga orang kata budu ini lebih sedap kalau kita makan sisa lepas orang lain makan. HAI ...BUDU...BUDU...BUDU...Gaya yang tak sanggup aku telan apabila makan budu dengan seorang sahabat yang tinggal serumah (masa bujang-bujang dulu merantau di KL). Apabila mula makan dicubit ikan panggang banyak banyak dimasukkan dalam pinggan budu dan dipenyet habis habisan sampai tak nampak budu. Di saat itu aku terus hilang selera..tengok saja tak jadi nak makan. Nak ambil pinggan budu lain...tak tergamak pulak..(pengalaman makan budu yang tak dapat dilupakan seumur hidup).


Disini budu dan ulam petai rebus bersama bayam praksi (mungkin jadi ubat ....apa..kena cek). Budu boleh diproses sendiri. Budu asli yang belum di masak ditapis dan dimasak dengan campuran cili boh, asam jawa,dan 'nnisae (gula melaka) secukup rasa....adjust sendiri.

Ends the meal with a bit of dessert...pulut durian with santan yum yum yummy!

Suruhlah tokbah ngare dale bahaso ore puteh barulah ghama lagi visitors....heh heh...

Sunah weh.. tokbah kureng sikit ngare kut oghe putih ke nati xleh nok express feeling dio hok betul benar so hentam sajo lah hehe

bui gapo dio nok tulih kali ni hehe. Takdok mano doh napok duriyea loni kat jln kebun sultan tu ado lg oghe jjual ssitu tapi gak mahal ler mugo demo tu jual ko cino. Nati lah mama buat pulok sambal tu ko Dini time duriyea banyok.

Hello Naniasda, ha ha, I learned a new expression, 'warga emas'.....
Hey, you guys are not old....
Old is when your grandkids feed you porridge, your dentures in a glass on the table, ha ha ha.

Like my wife says, "the day Lee doesn't look at women, that is the day I know he is old", ha ha.
The last time I ate 'budu' was wayyyy back in the late '70s at a Malay friend's house dekat Lenggong.
I have always enjoyed Malay foods.
Your budu looks really delicious. Nice well taken pics too.

One time stayed at Shah Alam, early 80s, and I was the only Chinese among all the Malay homes, my neighbours.
And when returning from my travels to the East Coast or Perlis, Penang will buy rambutans, crabs, udang galas, durians, most times I get free from my contractors, and as I don't cook, give to my neighbours.
They in turn bila masak passed over a plate to me.
You have a nice day, stay young and simpan satu lagu dalam hati.

Hi Lee,
Nice of you to come here...anyone over 60 is considered a 'warga emas', I'm not there yet and hey..can see my MOTH smiling from ear to ear when you say you guys are not old, dia mesti suka orang cakap macam tu hehe but cannot deny lah we are always young at heart 'winkwink'.

So you have tasted budu, hope you like the taste, when we were staying in our terrace house our neighbour was a 'Cina Kampung' and they eat budu everyday and their lifestyle is already like malays, talk in kelantanese dialect and bestfriends pun melayu jugak.

Budu days are over for me. It is funny how taste can change over the years.

A number of reasons Pakcik Al-Manar why taste change over the years and one of them is that the number of taste buds decreases as you age so usually salty and sweet tastes are lost first followed by bitter and sour tastes. In addition the mouth produces less saliva as you age and this causes dry mouth, which can affect the sense of taste.

Tak tahu dah ada entry baru. Singgahlah kepondok Pakcik. Senanglah tahu ada cerita baru. Inikan pula tentang budu. Kalau di negeri jiran ini ukan udu buat pencicah tetapi budu dimasukkan kedalam beberapa masakan lain, bubur lambok dll.
